Why you need to assess a candidate’s communication skills during the interview?

Effective communication is important for a productive and healthy workplace. It has many benefits. Consider how:

How to assess a candidate’s communications skills?

  • You can know a lot about a candidate’s communication skills from their resume. Pay attention to candidates’ sentence phrasing. Clear, simple sentences and no spelling and grammar errors show good communication and proofreading skills.
  • Candidates can’t fake their communication skills. During interviews, look closely at how candidates express themselves, if they are calm and composed and listen closely to what you have to say.
  • Avoid unclear questions, like “Do you like to communicate with people” or “How good are your communication skills?” Rather, ask detailed questions where you get to test their communication skills and decide how good or bad they are.
  • If the role requires client interaction, you can add role-playing activity to your interview process. You will test candidates’ abilities and simulate job duties.
  • To evaluate written communication skills, including tasks like crafting emails or asking them to prepare a brief article.

Red Flags

  • Lack of persuasion abilities: Good communicators do not just provide facts but are also able to influence others. Look for candidates who are persuasive and creative.
  • Too long or too short answers: “No/Yes” replies don’t leave enough room for discussion. Similarly, never-ending replies could be confusing. Candidates with good communication skills will maintain a balance between getting their points across and respecting your time.
  • Uncomfortable body language: Being nervous is normal during interviews. But, candidates who are too hesitant to talk or fail to maintain eye contact will have a tough time interacting with coworkers, managers and clients.
  • Poor presentation skills: If you notice that candidates are having difficulty expressing themselves, it is likely they will also find it difficult to deliver presentations or share their views on day-to-day or complex issues.
  • Arrogant or rude behavior: Bossy attitude, constant interruptions and rude comments are all red flags. Such candidates won’t be able to collaborate effectively with their team members.
