What Does an HR Assistant Do?

HR Assistant Salary and Job Outlook

According to O*NET Online, which draws on U.S. Department of Labor data for this exact occupation (Human Resources Assistants, Except Payroll and Timekeeping), the median wage in 2025 was $50,610 a year, or about $24.33 an hour. Employment in this specific role is projected to decline 1 percent or more through 2034, with about 9,000 openings a year expected anyway, mostly from workers moving into HR specialist or generalist roles.

The role falls into Job Zone Three, which typically calls for one to two years of related training or an Associate’s degree, though a meaningful share of employers now ask for a Bachelor’s degree, which is why the requirements above list both paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an HR Assistant and an HR Administrative Assistant?
The titles are largely used interchangeably across employers, and the day to day responsibilities overlap heavily, covering record keeping, HR database updates, and coordination support. Where a distinction exists, it usually comes down to company convention rather than a meaningfully different scope of work. See our HR Administrative Assistant job description for a template with a slightly different emphasis.

Do you need a degree to become an HR Assistant?
Most employers look for at least an Associate’s degree or equivalent training, and many now prefer a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field, though relevant experience can sometimes substitute.

What software skills should an HR Assistant candidate have?
Familiarity with an HRMS or HRIS platform, strong MS Excel skills, and experience with resume databases or an applicant tracking system are the most commonly requested skills for this role.

How do you evaluate an HR Assistant candidate’s real world skill before hiring?
A structured work sample, such as a short HR data entry or scheduling coordination exercise, gives a clearer signal than a resume alone, since it shows how a candidate actually handles the administrative volume the role demands.

Why Candidates No Longer Trust Job Postings, and What Employers Can Do About It

Candidate trust in job postings has eroded to the point where treating a listing as a good faith, straightforward offer is now the exception rather than the default assumption. This is not one problem, it is several separate failures that have compounded on top of each other over a short period. Only 8 percent of […]

Skillfishing: The New Recruiting Trend Replacing Traditional Job Descriptions

Skillfishing describes candidates, and sometimes existing employees, who overstate their capabilities, presenting a version of themselves on paper that looks strong but does not hold up once the actual work begins. The term is new, but the underlying research behind it is not a fringe finding. A full 91 percent of HR professionals now believe […]
