The following are sample questions for candidates appearing for a Firefighter interview. These questions will help you evaluate and assess each and every candidate so as to select the perfect person for this job. 

What is the role of a Firefighter?

Firefighters are public service workers and hold tremendous responsibility. They are assigned the task of handling accidental and intentional fires and evacuating those affected by the fires. When hiring candidates, their firefighting capabilities and physical health should be assessed, along with their courage, compassion, and critical thinking abilities. A good Firefighter is capable of handling crises with immense wit and works in favor of human compassion. Requirements for Firefighter candidates vary drastically according to the location. Candidates typically require some form of first-hand training, such as from a college or from a local fire department. They may also be provided subsequent training after applying for the job. Firstly, you should prefer the candidates who have had some form of volunteering experience at a fire department or local emergency center. Additionally, basic therapeutic skills such as giving CPR or even an EMT training will be a plus for the candidates. Questions based on specific situations work best at targeting a candidate’s problem-solving skills. The occupation regards a multitude of emergency situations, and thus requires great levels of dedication, hard work, motivation, and critical thinking. The following interview questions will help you in the selection of a perfect candidate for this job.

Operational and Situational questions

  • In what way would you cater a fainted or unconscious person? What steps will you take?
  • How would you manage if you received two different emergency calls from two different firefighting seniors? Elaborate.
  • Suppose you are assigned a task that is unacceptable and supposedly life-threatening according to you. What will you do? Will you decline it?
  • Suppose you are called to handle an emergency situation and a resident who had been previously evacuated from the building wishes to return to the building in a frantic manner. What would your response be? How will you take action? Elaborate.
  • What action would you take if you found a co-worker being unethical and stealing personal belongings during a firefighting session? How will you handle the situation?

Role-specific questions

  • Why do you want to work as a Firefighter? Elaborate on your motivations.
  • How might a Firefighter actively participate in fire prevention?
  • Fire departments face a surplus of difficulties and challenges in modern times. Can you state a few?
  • Are you familiar with the vision and goal of this agency?
  • What do you believe to be the most significant obligation for a Firefighter? And why?
  • Which firefighting equipment is the most challenging to handle and operate? State and explain your reasons.

Behavioral questions

  • Describe a time when you had an argument or another contradiction with a coworker. Were you able to resolve it? How?
  • Describe a time when you dealt with an emergency situation. Also, elaborate on your thought process and resolutions.
  • Describe an incident where you erroneously operated a piece of firefighting equipment. What was the correct way to operate it?
