Media Assistant Job Description

We are hiring a qualified Media Assistant to support the administration of our media activities. A Media Assistant tracks advertising projects throughout their lifecycle to help ensure accuracy and efficiency, typically working under a Media Buyer or Media Planner.

To succeed in this role, you must have a keen eye for detail, strong research skills, and familiarity with media buying and planning.

What Does a Media Assistant Do?

  • Take on purchasing tasks while working under a Media Buyer
  • Resolve issues and help build good relationships with media outlets and clients
  • Conduct research to collect useful media related data, such as Nielsen ratings
  • Ensure that billing procedures run smoothly and accurately
  • Create and monitor media schedules
  • Proofread and revise agreements and contracts
  • Prepare letters, reports, and other documentation
  • Help planners and media buyers develop, execute, and monitor media plans

Media Assistant Salary and Job Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track “Media Assistant” as its own occupation. The closest tracked category, Media and Communication Workers, All Other (SOC 27-3099), reported a 2025 median annual wage of $73,620, with about 34,300 workers employed in 2024 and roughly 3,000 openings projected annually through 2034. Because this is a broad catch all category covering more senior specialists as well as assistants, an entry level Media Assistant role typically pays toward the lower end of that range.

Job Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in Advertising, Marketing, or a related field
  • Prior experience as a Media Assistant; experience with digital advertising is a plus
  • Sound knowledge of media buying and planning
  • Experience working with MS Office
  • Familiarity with media analytics software, especially comScore
  • Ability to multitask in a fast paced team environment
  • Strong research skills along with a keen eye for detail
  • Proficiency in English
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • An analytical mind with a problem solving attitude

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Media Assistant and a Media Buyer?
A Media Assistant provides administrative and research support, such as tracking schedules and gathering ratings data, while a Media Buyer negotiates and purchases ad placements directly. See our Media Buyer job description if you are hiring for the role that owns those purchasing decisions.

Does a Media Assistant need prior media industry experience?
Not always. Many employers hire candidates with a related degree and strong organizational skills, then train them on specific media buying and analytics tools such as comScore.

How do you evaluate a Media Assistant candidate before hiring?
A short exercise involving a mock media schedule or a sample analytics report gives a clearer picture of attention to detail and research skill than a resume alone.

Why Candidates No Longer Trust Job Postings, and What Employers Can Do About It

Candidate trust in job postings has eroded to the point where treating a listing as a good faith, straightforward offer is now the exception rather than the default assumption. This is not one problem, it is several separate failures that have compounded on top of each other over a short period. Only 8 percent of […]

Skillfishing: The New Recruiting Trend Replacing Traditional Job Descriptions

Skillfishing describes candidates, and sometimes existing employees, who overstate their capabilities, presenting a version of themselves on paper that looks strong but does not hold up once the actual work begins. The term is new, but the underlying research behind it is not a fringe finding. A full 91 percent of HR professionals now believe […]
